Group Project Overview

Situation:

As technology advances in developed countries, humans have the ability to spread their knowledge and skills to other parts of the world. Water is necessary to all forms of life on earth. Without clean water, life would perish. The particular audience in mind includes those in impoverished areas lacking access to clean water; water that can be used for everyday tasks such as cooking, cleaning, bathing, and most importantly: drinking. Water is expended quicker than one may think and survival is completely dependent on access to clean water. It is necessary that contaminated water be purified for safe, everyday use.

Group Design Brief:

Design and produce a water filtration system based off an aspect of nature to purify contaminated water when clean water is scarce or inaccessible so that impoverished areas can have access to clean water.

Specifications:

  • must purify polluted/contaminated water
  • must provide clean water for everyday use for poverty stricken areas
  • must provide a water quantity enough to supply a family
  • clean water must be easily accessible
  • clean water must be purified in a reasonable amount of time
  • end product must be thoroughly separated from contaminants so product is safe
  • must be designed with an aspect of nature in mind

Limitations:

  • specific location of water source chosen contains certain pollutants
  • families require certain amounts of water necessary to survive on (2L ingest + cooking, cleaning, bathing)
  • must meet fixed and reasonable volume and rate
  • product is safe to drink
  • must mimic a system of nature that involves filtering a substance
